Whether it was an artillery battery miles away, a naval gunship out to sea, or a ground attack aircraft high above the battlefield, such weapons systems would be much less effective without the services of well-trained forward observers. In the Regio Esercito, each infantry division had its own artillery support assets, and although many of these artillery pieces and aircraft were outdated, they remained lethal under the right circumstances. Given the devastating firepower that these forward observers could direct at their targets, they quickly became high-priority targets for enemy commanders.
